It’s the first weekend in February, and die-hard sports fans all know what that means, right?? It’s time to celebrate America’s most beloved sport, to take some time out to be excited and entertained by the greatest, most hard-working, most death-defying professional athletes in the world today.
No, I’m not talking about football and the Super Bowl. Of course, I’m referring to the second annual National Pro Wrestling Day! This is the day we pause to celebrate the great athletes who deliver hot Indy pro wrestling all year round. You can check out my tribute to last year’s first Pro Wrestling Day, and learn more about the 2014 event and how to get involved.
To celebrate the holiday, I will review this match from last year’s event: Drew Gulak in blue and white trunks vs. Frank O’Rourke in black trunks with tall boots about up to his knees (nice!)
Both of these men will compete in today’s free event in Pennsylvania at 1:oo PM Eastern. You can also stream the show live on YouTube for free.
This barn-burner from last year is available on YouTube. To show honor and respect for their sport, the two studs (in their classic trunks and boots) begin the match with some actual mat wrestling by Gawd — a bunch of picture-perfect Headlocks by O’Rourke, and a jaw-dropping Headscissors by Gulak @ 7:58. With all this gripping and holding down on the mat, I feel like I’ve traveled back in time not by one year, but more like 30 years to a time when wrestling involved actual wrestling. Gulak and O’Rourke present for us an intelligent, traditional Evenly-Matched Scientific Bout, each man alternating between controlling the action and suffering like a busted up ragdoll.
As time goes by, the action heats up. O’Rourke tenderizes Gulak’s chest with some vicious chops. Gulak retaliates by flipping his opponent ass-over-applecart into the turnbuckles to land on the top of his head. A few times. And the viewers get an eyeful of long legs, tall leather boots, too-tight trunks, and hard, hard bodies.
To impress and excite the fans, the two studs deliver a death-defying flip off the top rope, really “leaving it all in the ring.” (Careful boys, your mat wrestling was already worth the price of admission. We don’t want anybody getting hurt and not being around for Pro Wrestling Day next year!)
To put the final cherry on top, Gulak rolls up O’Rourke in a Dragon Sleeper @ 15:15, wraps his legs tight around that rock-hard torso, and squeeeezes out a submission. O’Rourke must tap out or die. Wow, Gulak actually won with an actual wrestling move! Damn, I love Pro Wrestling Day!
So once again, Happy Wrestling Day! Even if you don’t choose to watch this particular event, let’s all do something to support the sport this weekend. Go buy a DVD or download a PPV, go see an Indy show in your town, or visit your favorite wrestler’s Facebook or Twitter and wish him Happy Wrestling Day — let him know you love his work.
Not to sound like a broken record but “great post, Arsenal!”
Drew Gulak caught my eye a few of years back and it’s been interesting to watch how he has shaped his ring persona … and body, which I find to be sublimely sexy, love his gear and hairy chest… Like an incarnation of Jack Brisco.
Frank O’Rourke certainly matches Gulak in very way… He is a modern day superhero come to life. The hello touches on his gear are hot … Would love to see him untrimmed, that is, unless he is naturally smooth. It works with the bald head though…
