Bull Terriers

This violent Mexican wrestling match available on YouTube was dubbed a “Bull Terrier” match.  Apparently that means three wrestlers are chained together by their necks.  Two of those wrestlers — Cage and Mesias — are big, shirtless Heels.  The third “Bull Terrier” is Alberto Patron, also known as Alberto Del Rio.  This stud is just too darn handsome to be involved in a violent torture scene like this!

Of course the two massive Heels join forces and proceed to over-power the fan favorite, whipping and choking Alberto with their chains.  They also bring chairs into the ring to crack him over the head.  The fact that Cage is an American, inflicting this degrading abuse on the popular Mexican celebrity, I’m sure added to the audience’s frustration and arousal.

What a ridiculous mismatch.  Poor Alberto has no chance of winning or even surviving!  Why in the world would the federation or the fans permit this unfair situation? Do they prefer when the Hero takes a whipping??

And why would Alberto agree to this insane torture knowing the injustice of the situation?!

Mesias humps Alberto on the ropes.

Unfortunately, Alberto wore a black t-shirt for this match, maybe to prevent the steel chain from biting into his flesh.  Or maybe it’s because the other men — Mesias and especially Cage — look so much more massive and powerful with their shirts off that he’s ashamed to be seen bare-chested in the same ring as them.

You may have heard of Mesias before — he’s known to be a crazy sasitic punisher in the ring.  Here he goes for a ride on Alberto’s back, wrapping the chain around his neck and violently yanking it up like the reins on a horse.  It almost looks like he’s drilling Alberto.

Cage is the perfect villain to go down to Mexico and beat up all the Luchadores.  As a white American male, a powerful one at that, he is sure to inspire loathing from the Mexican audiences.

His massive physique casts him as a symbol of the USA itself — a bloated, violent Super-Bully.  When he cracks Alberto over the head with a chair or whips him with a chain, it is symbolic of U.S. military and economic power.

Also, the entertainment value of any pro wrestling match increases based on the degree of over-whelming odds faced by the hero.  First of all, Cage is gigantic — swoler and harder than Alberto, his over-sized physique proudly exposed.  Second, Cage is assisted by Mesias, the two brutes working unfairly together against their lone victim.

Third, Cage and his henchman bring in weapons to illegally harm Alberto — steel chairs to the skull, the chain wrapped around their fists, etc.  Finally, as a white male, Cage is perceived to also possess certain socio-economic and political advantages over his Mexican victim.

Either one could flip him, but together is more fun.

So Alberto is clearly out-matched by the foreign powers.  Based on the popularity of the Evil Foreigner gimmick, I believe people from all cultures share a common fetish: the desire for a big, brutal Outsider to take us over and dominate us.  Maybe this sentiment has become ingrained over the centuries as a defense mechanism — a strategy for surviving frequent wars and conquests.  If he beats you and conquers you, learn to get off on it.

A chair to the gut seems totally unnecessary.

Mesias may be more cruel to his fellow Latino than the American.  Here Cage watches passively as Mesias drives a chair into poor Alberto’s gut.

The audience probably hates Mesias even worse than they do Cage because Mesias is a traitor to his own people by giving aid and comfort to the enemy.  And our beloved Alberto has no hope of escape, still chained by the neck to these huge monsters!

The promoters seem to feel they hit on a successful formula — Cage invading Mexico to beat the fuck out of the hero, Alberto.

They would go on to put these two enemies in the ring many times over the past year, with Cage gaining the upper hand and grinding down Alberto more often than not, while the Mexican fans watched their hero’s destruction in rage and frustration.

Check out the final degradation of the Mexican hero in this match: Cage drapes the beaten Alberto in the Stars and Stripes and stands with one foot on his chest to mark his territory.  Wow, I bet that got the audience all hot and bothered.
