Some talented cartoonist is creating a series of drawings on Tumblr in honor of our favorite sport called the “ABCs of Pro Wrestling.” For each letter of the alphabet, he will sketch an image demonstrating a hold or a defining aspect of pro wrestling along with a fun alliterative caption.
To continue our Body Slam theme from yesterday’s gallery, here is his drawing for “G is for Gorilla Press.” Ignoring their cartoonish facial expressions, take a moment to check out the straining muscles on the dominant wrestler. The victim is drawn to be much smaller and weaker, wearing a flamboyant spandex suit to cover his wimpy body — the very image of a hopeless jobber!
Probably the most beautiful image the artist has posted so far was a traditional White Meat Baby-Face for the “F is for Face” drawing. With his ideal physique, bulgey trunks, and deadly thighs, it’s no wonder all the fans are reaching out their hands to touch him.
This artist has a real talent for drawing incredible male physiques adorned in authentic pro gear. I wonder if he might be persuaded to create images just a bit more serious and suggestive — just a bit racier and less caricatured? That would be hot.
His caption for “F” described the suffering tendencies of stud wrestlers like this: “Physically fantastic, yet fundamentally flawed, these fan favorite’s fire usually fizzles out far before the feel finished.”
“C is for Camel Clutch” featured a dominant, well-muscled Beast from the East judging from his unusual beard. Like most Beasts from the East, he loves to destroy weak-yet-handsome American pretty boys in his deadly Back Breaker. I’m not sure why the artist drew flames in the background — perhaps to imply how hot it is to watch the helpless jobber suffer. Is that also why the letters in “Camel Clutch” are so turgid and swollen?
Like any good pro wrestling caption, his “C” caption emphasizes the victim’s agony: “Crushing the rib cage, cranking the neck and back, causing continual and considerable chaos…C is for the Camel Clutch hold.”
It’s clear this artist is a wrestling lover — that he has watched a ton of matches probably from the mid-1980’s and has a solid grasp of how they looked in their gear at that time. He knows exactly how to draw their tall laced-up boots, their tight spandex. He also tends to draw one huge beast wrestler destroying a woefully under-sized victim — so he gets the appeal of the One-Sided Squash which was common in that era.
So this gives you a taste — you can see more of his artwork on the ABCs of Pro Wrestling tumblr. He isn’t through the entire alphabet yet — I think he is up to about “M” as I am typing this.
