The Cuckold Gimmick

The YouTube Channel known as Rassle Reel recently posted this August 1992 episode from Global Wrestling Federation featuring the rivalry between Chaz — seen here in the blue striped singlet — and the amazing Steven Dane in all white gear.  This Chaz vs. Dane rivalry is famous among wrestling lovers, and I’m sure many of us have these matches somewhere in our old video collections.

It seems Dane has recently cuckolded the “Teen Heart-throb” by stealing his girlfriend Alexa.  He makes out with the slut while Chaz watches (which I’ve heard really excites some dudes when this cuckolding happens to them…)

The purpose of the match — of the entire feud actually — is to humiliate and emasculate young Chaz.  Not only was his girlfriend Alexa stolen by the more-muscular Alpha Male, but Chaz is also beaten physically, made to suffer under Dane’s white trunks and boots.

Even their gear choices place Chaz in an inferior position as he is clad in a singlet that resembles a woman’s bathing-suit while Dane’s masculinity is proudly exposed.

I’ve never really understood why the GWF did this to Chaz — why they presented their young Fan Favorite repeatedly degraded by blond Heel, Steven Dane.  I can understand a bit of Baby-Face abuse to build heat, but at some point the Hero is supposed to take revenge and win the girl.

But in this case, they let Dane have his way with Chaz (and presumably Alexa.)  He kicks the weaker man’s ass at will, he blatantly makes out with Alexa right in front of Chaz, he outshines Chaz in appearance and in wrestling.  It’s as if the promoter either had a boner for Dane, or for Chaz’s humiliation.

Portraying the devious vixen, Alexa distracts Chaz, enabling her new boyfriend to roll up the gullible fool and defeat him.

This scene implies that females are a curse, that a man should keep his attention on the other male he is with (in this case, the nearly nude male in white) rather than looking at or thinking about a woman.  It’s kind of gay if you think about it.

The episode continues to tell the story of this bizarre love triangle as the next encounter between Chaz, Dane, and Alexa is presented.  As with most love triangles in literature and theater, the focus is on the intense relationship between the two competing males, more than on their common prize, the passive female.

Determined to look sexier and more appealing than Steven Dane, Chaz peels off his tear-away pants to reveal skimpy red briefs.  Oh yeah, this is that infamous match where Chaz and Dane wrestle in basically underwear.  If you call yourself a wrestling video collector, you must have this one in your archives somewhere, maybe in that shoebox under your bed.

Not to be out-shined by his rival, Dane enters the arena looking spectacular in a sequined robe.  He lets it fall open and suddenly, over a dozen old wrestling fans suffer heart attacks nationwide.

Of course Chaz will have no choice but to focus on Steven Dane (rather than on Alexa) when Dane strips down to that little lavender bikini.  This is getting raunchy, I love it.  How is this big guy going to keep that banana in its hammock?  Once again, Chaz has been defeated by Dane in both the Physique and the Gear Choice departments.

Chaz’s rage over being cucked is demonstrated by a violent assault on Dane early in the match.  Chaz even yank’s Dane’s trunks up his crack to imply a sexual assault.

Of course the elephant in the room is the sexy trunks worn by these competitors, with Chaz in bright red to match Alexa’s dress. I’ve seen gay underground wrestling videos where the dudes wear more clothing than this!

But the commentators say nothing, not even joking about those schlong thongs.  It’s as if the first rule of GWF wrestling gear is to not talk about GWF wrestling gear.

The cuckolding theme continues as Alexa is seen at stage left, watching her former lover being manhandled by her newer, bigger lover.  Her very presence reminds us of Chaz’s sexual failure, his inability to satisfy her compared to Steven Dane.

Another interpretation of this scene, from a queer perspective, is a presentation of bisexuality.  Dane is seen dominating both Alexa and Chaz, with Chaz now placed in the submissive female role.  As Dane yanks his bikini-clad playmate by the hair, one wonders if he gets rough with Alexa like that too.

Dane spreads Chaz wide open, reaching in under his taint to pull on those red panties and finish him off.  Dane is clearly the Man, so he gets to have his way with Chaz, or with Alexa, or both.

After the match, Dane turns me on by boastfully abusing poor, cuckolded Chaz:  “I proved it again tonight.  I can beat you any time, any place, anywhere you want, Big Boy!  You can’t do nothin’ about it.”

Next we fast forward to an image of Chaz in tight blue trunks.  After defeating some jobber, he is joined in the ring by the other two sides of the Love Triangle — Dane and Alexa.

Chaz asserts his masculinity by embracing and kissing his former lover.  This sends his rival into a jealous rage (although we aren’t quite sure if Dane is jealous of Chaz, or of Alexa.)  Anyway, Dane knocks Chaz down and stomps him to remind him who is boss, or perhaps to teach Chaz that his rightful place is in the ring getting physical with other men, not with women.

Then we see one of the most bizarre, sexually suggestive post-match humiliations in wrestling history.  Dane spews yellow liquid on Chaz’s bare back and proceeds to stroke it up and down, painting Chaz with it — spreading the goo from the helpless man’s hair to the waistband of his trunks.  Chaz just lays there accepting his fate, just letting Dane soil him.
