The Winner

Oh this rookie is going to pay dearly for THAT cocky display!

Oh this rookie is going to pay dearly for THAT cocky display!

The images in this gallery were taken from a YouTube video recently posted to the Richard Land channel (I love that channel!).  Mark Young in patriotic stars-and-stripes tights faced Barry Horowitz at Madison Square Garden in September, 1989.

Mark Young never won many matches, so how is this jobber justified to waste everyone’s time with his pre-match break-dance??  Barry Horowitz is an old pro in the ring and will soon put this uppity show-off with his flashy tights and flamboyant spineroo in his place, don’t worry.

MarkYoung1Barry Horowitz was under-rated in my opinion.  He was a genius at entertaining the audience with a nice mix of self-deprecating comedy with blatant homo-erotic displays, including frequent presentations of his bulging, colorful trunks which were always a bit too snug and revealing to be unintentional.  He always sold his pain like a champ too, grunting and groaning even for rookie Mark Young who works a series of Armbars early in their bout.

The flamboyant tights make this move look even sweeter.

The flamboyant tights make this move look even sweeter.

The early-match Arm Punishment by Mark Young included this little gem:  a Spinning Sit-Down Arm Scissor. Our focus is drawn to Young’s sexy long legs, highlighted in those brightly colored tights.

From his break-dancing moves when he entered the ring to this exaggerated spin-and-scissor, we’re meant to look at, think about, and fantasize about those legs and what they can do.  Horowitz plays along, letting the rookie grind on his arm to put him over with the crowd.

Who, exactly, is really in control here?

Who, exactly, is really in control here?

Young rolls up Horowitz in this suggestive pinning position, with the pinned man’s junk near his face.  To avoid the pin, Horowitz begins to buck and grind, thrusting his lime-green bulge up into Young’s face.

At one point in his career, Barry Horowitz was nick-named “The Winner” because, ironically, he almost never won any matches.  However, who is really “winning” in this situation?  Who is the apparent Alpha Male?  Horowitz was The Boss in the ring despite his infrequent victories, calling the shots and controlling the action, using and abusing his opponents, and flaunting his sexuality in “helpless” positions like this.

MarkYoung3Soon Horowitz turns the tables, putting Mark Young in his usual position of Cute, Out-Matched Rookie Jobber.

Horowitz makes this chump pay for his cocky break-dancing, for his brightly colored tights, for his annoying Armlocks, for his youth and good looks in general.  Mark Young has a lot to suffer for, and The Winner will now see that justice is served.

MarkYoung8MarkYoung6My favorite part of the match is a long Body Scizzer applied by The Winner around Young’s narrow waist.  Now who’s got the powerful, attention-grabbing legs?!   Horowitz keeps it locked on, in various poses and positions, for a glorious 90 seconds (from 55:32 until 57:07).

Each time Captain America balls up his fist to punch out of the scissor, Horowitz suddenly thrusts his hips, ratcheting up the pressure and preventing the escape attempt.  The grinding and grunting is all very sexually suggestive and homo-erotic.

MarkYoung7The match ends with Young rolling up and pinning The Winner in a feet-in-the-air position similar to earlier in the contest — see above animation.  Again Horowitz bumps and grinds, thrusting with his legs — either to escape or to get off.  They must enjoy this position because they keep going back to it.

Although Horowitz suffered this humiliating loss to the Young rookie, he is the one with his crotch grinding in the other man’s face at the climax of the match, symbolically being pleasured.  Horowitz may be in the submissive wrestling position, but he is in the dominant sexual position.  We get the sense from this display that The Winner, despite losing this match, is the actual winner.

Mark Young was Chief Jay Strongbow’s son, and at 6’1″ and 230+ lbs he had the minimum size WWE looked for then. Gone this past February, RIP. I always liked him and would have liked to see more of him, his patriotic gear was always an attention-getter, as was the breakdancing!

I loved Barry Horowitz. I only knew him as a WWF guy, so this is cool to see. He was a real pro and always fun to watch. I agree with you on his attitude, selling and excellent taste in trunks.

I loved Mark’s (rare) tv appearances during the 80s / early 90s. It has been difficult to find decent photos or videos of him, so a huge thanks for this great/hot post.
Sad that he died so young this year.
Barry Horowitz was a good heel/jobber too.

    Great post, Arsenal!

I really feel like Barry Horowitz is one of the more unsung workers in the history of pro rasslin’… I remember his early days in the NWA and enjoyed the evolution of his in ring persona over the years … I thought it was distinctive for the time to see a “jobber” develop a “character” for himself (… And he got beefier over time too so that was appreciated as well)

Agree that Barry Horowitz is one of the unsung workers from the world of pro wrestling! Here’s a Shoot Interview by Barry (one of a number of worthwhile Horowitz interviews available on YouTube): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXAz71zkssk
