May the Best Man Win

Magee-ChoshuA classic Japanese wrestling video, recently posted to YouTube, features the “Mega Man” Tom Magee in his trademark red posing strap against local hero, Riki Choshu.  It’s always a treat to find a rare Tom Magee video, especially of this clear quality, because Magee’s swole bod is just jaw-dropping — WOWWIE!

Japanese fans go wild for a god-like physique (just like all wrestling fans.)

Back in 2012, I wrote a three-part series of articles about this massive, dexterous, and beautiful body-builder, exploring the mystery behind why his career quickly fizzled out.

Part 1 provided background on the talented Adonis touted to be McMahon’s “next champion.”  His many athletic awards verify his natural talent.

Magee's flippy offense was innovative and unexpected.

Magee’s flippy offense was innovative and unexpected.

Part 2 of my series provided video proof that Magee was NOT an untrainable klutz as many believe.  For example, in today’s bout against Choshu, Magee busts out this hot Round-off Back-Handspring into a Dropkick!  Could other popular He-Men like Lex Lugar, or the Ultimate Warrior perform that sweet move?! Magee3Magee5In Part 3 I concluded that Magee was just too pretty to push.  His grace and beauty gave the straight (and mentally closeted) fans a case of Gay Panic.  One newsletter described him as downright “effeminate in the ring.”  This was the kiss of death for a pro wrestler during the 1980s when society was less tolerant and pro wrestling was in its own closet of denial about its homo-erotic underpinnings.

But I don’t want to re-hash my comments from five years ago.  Today I want to just enjoy Magee showing off his amazing musculature in his little red speedo and watch him try to win a match in Japan (where the non-Japanese wrestlers are almost never permitted to win.)

Magee6Magee9The Japanese fans love to see their local boys like Riki Choshu thrown into impossible situations and then overcome the odds.  They loved seeing monsters from the west like Big Van Vader or Stan Hansen show up and try to break their intrepid heroes.

Magee provided a new kind of monster for Choshu to overcome: the Muscle Beast, the Giant Flex-Monster.

In Japan, even the Pile-Driver can't stop the unbeatable Baby-Faces.

In Japan, even the Pile-Driver can’t stop the unbeatable Baby-Faces.

Feeling upstaged and out-muscled, Choshu under-sells many of Magee’s moves, refusing to suffer like he should.  We even see him kick out after this perfectly-executed Pile-Driver by the He-Man.

(We’ve seen other Japanese wrestlers like Hiroshi Wajima disrespect Magee like this, perhaps out of envy over his breath-taking appearance.)

In Japan, Clotheslines can be more effective than Pile-Drivers.

In Japan, Clotheslines can be more effective than Pile-Drivers.

Choshu then defeats the Mega Man with three Running Clotheslines.  That’s right, he conquered this Greek God by slapping an arm into his massive chest.  Three times.

But give Magee credit — he obediently laid down for the smaller, pudgier man like a big pitbull that’s been taught to obey a child.

Magee14I think Magee meant to kick out and keep fighting.  If you watch the above animation, I’m not sure the ref reached the third count.  On the count of two (I think), Magee raises his hips and thrusts Riki Choshi off his chest.

But the homer ref decides that was close enough to a Three Count and declares Choshu, his countryman, the winner over this foreign Man-Beast.  Oh well, win or lose, Tom Magee is still a pleasure to watch and fantasize about, and I’m glad this old video from the other side of the planet found its way into my YouTube spank-bank.

That was ABSOLUTELY not a pin!!!

  2. pec 57 says:

look up his fight scene with Brian Bosworth in Stone Cold. At least there it’s somewhat plausible he might have lost.

There are many articles that talk about why Tom Magee never really made it. I think that the most important reason is that he had many other areas of interest. Also, the push from the WWE became complicated because of the Ultimate Warrior, who was not a good wrestler at all. Thanks for posting this match. These are two of my favorites from this period.

  4. Ringmuscle says:

Ironically it was Magee’s amazing body and looks that sank him with the WWF/WWE. His fan base was populated with dudes who liked to see a handsome muscleman wrestle and that made the execs a little nervous. While other Adonis’s like Rude and Steamboat etc attracted a mixed audience MaGee was definitely ours.

love how his too tiny tights really show his cock size

Those red hot trunks leave nothing to imagination. If only Tony Nese would wear those in the ring….

This guy was before his time and would have done much better in today’s more body conscious arena. But then again, him against Brad A. or Z man or Lance Von Erich would have been epic!
