Mister Mister

Continuing on the theme in the previous post of the vicious Asian attacker and his mysterious tactics, let’s take a closer look at the sadistic tag team of Mister Fuji and Mister Saito in action.  With their unusual wrestling gear, exotic arsenal of holds, and limited English, they represented a popular staple in pro wrestling:  the cruel foreigner, the invader, the unknown, the incomprehensible.  Nothing could turn up the heat for the xenophobic — perhaps racist — crowd of red-neck, patriotic fans than some dirty tactics employed by anyone who was clearly not from around here.

And following World War II through the Korean War and Viet Nam conflicts, Asian wrestlers inspired an even greater level of fear and loathing in the minds of the American fans because of bad blood between our nations.  After all, didn’t those people use sneak attacks, booby traps, torture, and other dirty tactics against our troops?  Mr. Fuji and Mr. Saito played off these feelings by employing  plenty of blatant double-team moves, claw holds, heart punches — whatever they could do to make their Western opponent suffer and to make the audience roar in outrage.  And they were certain to smile and laugh as they watched their helpless victim squirm in agony at their feet, which drove the audience into hysterics.  Maybe this gave the viewers a chance to vent their anger and sadness over the recent clashes with Eastern countries, or maybe it was just a way for Fuji and Saito to generate heat and therefore make a buck.

In this match, the Asian invaders go to work on a strapping, muscular baby-face named Laurent Soucie, wearing the red speedo, as his partner and the audience watch in horror.
