In the 1970’s, colorful comic books featuring pro wrestling themes were sold in Mexico (those lucky Latinos!) The stories and images in this popular “pulp fiction” would range from fairly outrageous to sometimes raunchy. Some of the action seen in and out of the ring bordered on soft-core porn, so I’m not exactly sure what age group these seedy little comic books were intended for.
Each issue presented fantastic scenarios that centered on bigger-than-life wrestling heroes, pretty girls in danger, handsome dudes tied up or battling for supremacy, strange and sadistic villains — the usual erotic imagery and tales of domination, danger, and defeat intended to inspire the horny working-class audience to purchase an issue.
Here are some covers from the “Cuervo Azul” (or “Blue Raven”) series that I found on a Lucha Libre blog recently. I’ve tried to translate any Spanish text using Google (blame Google if it’s wrong) and added some comments describing what one might infer from the images on the cover.
Check these out and see if they inspire you to make a run for the border!
