Davey Richards recently provided a training class for young wrestlers in England. (Where the hell can I sign up for that??) Anyway, when they posted the notes from the training, I noticed one of Davey’s instructions to the class was “Show your face.”
This is a great lesson for young wrestlers to learn — I’m glad to know Davey is teaching them right. For many wrestling fans, those sublime expressions are so critical to the enjoyment of the match. To check out the images of Davey’s session, visit the Tony Knox flickr site (but just to warn you, these images will make you feel envious of those lucky trainees as Davey cradles and controls them…)
So here are some images of pro wrestlers who heeded the words of their trainers and remembered to Give Good Face. Check out those gritted teeth, those tear-filled eyes, those expressions of helpless submission. And a good Heel will remember to show his face as well, baring his teeth and offering up that angry, destructive, hungry expression of devouring domination.
Am I the only wrestling fan who pauses the video in order to stare at the faces?
You’re not alone in pausing to stare at the faces! Love the Randy shot. And that last sleeper picture…!
yeah ….. im a big face fan …..
i love watching the agony 🙂
I’ve said it a million times…The face and how it is Worked in a match, both on the part of the Heel and Jobber, is going to tell me if the match is going to be worth watching. If the Heel is NOT showing facially, how mean he is–his enjoyment–or the Pleasure he’s getting as he Punishes his victim…I loose total interest. Same goes with the Jobber…if he is not masking his face in agony ( of which I LOVE ) or getting verbal, ie: begging, pleading for the Heel to stop the Punishment, it’s as well over for me. The face on both parts HAVE TO SPEAK MILLIONS……..
which is why masked wrestlers have always left me cold. You can’t see their face.
