Mankind vs. Mandible

Wearing jeans, boots, and a cowboy hat to the ring, Bart Gunn is meant to represent either America’s masculine ideal and cultural hero: the brave, self-reliant cowboy, or a homo-sexual archetype.  Fans are left to speculate about way the Smoking Gunn is swinging.

His opponent is the creepy, disfigured, fully-clothed monster known as Mankind.
Bart had better keep his mouth firmly shut, because Mankind is known for cramming his fingers into his opponent’s mouth to claw the mandible and put the man to sleep.

Fans of jobber punishment are treated to numerous images of the shirtless cowboy rendered helpless by the relentless assault of the freaky monster.

Gunn sells his agony beautifully, draping his body over the ropes like your grandma’s laundry on washing day, and collapsing to one knee in his too-tight jeans.

It’s not long before the beast tries for his repulsive Mandible Claw move as he struggles to work his fingers between Gunn’s lips.

Bart avoids the Claw (the oral rape) by slipping outside the ropes.  But he is well aware that he must get back in the ring and take his beating — his inevitable humiliation courtesy of Mankind’s probing fingers.

The Mandible Claw is described as follows: “The aggressor places his middle and ring fingers into the opponent’s mouth, sliding them under the tongue and jabbing into the soft tissue found at the bottom of the mouth. The thumb and/or palm of the same hand is placed under the jaw, and pressure is applied downward by the middle and ring fingers while the thumb/palm forces the jaw upwards.”

Mankind once claimed on a television interview that the painful sensation in the nerves under the tongue is so strong that it inhibits vision and, when applied long enough, can force the opponent to black-out.  The Mandible Claw is also apparently so painful and paralyzing that the victim is unable to simply bite down on Mankind’s fingers and force him to withdraw them.

Then Mankind secures the Mandible Claw and the match gets very homo-erotic very fast.  He jams his fingers into Bart’s mouth, he circles his legs around the cowboy’s waist to hold him, he presses on the nerves under his victim’s tongue to subdue him.  Soon Gunn’s arms are as limp as wet noodles as he passes out from Mankind’s relentless finger banging…

If you get into the Mandible Claw, be sure to check out this match on YouTube.

We soon learn that Mankind is absolutely obsessed with applying the Mandible Claw on young Bart Gunn — unable to resist sticking his fingers in the cowboy’s mouth.  Well after the match, while the Smoking Gunn is providing an interview on his treatment in the ring at the hands of Mankind, the beast attacks again, assaulting his handsome victim with yet another humiliating, deep-throated mouth-probing…

Thanks, I love your interpretation and insight on all things, but I’m especially excited to see a column on Bart Gunn. This is definitely one of his high points.

Bart is my absolute favorite jobber, for many of the reasons you said – handsome, big, great body, jeans, cowboy, manly, etc. From the minute I saw him in a singles match with Ted Dibiase (Sr.) I was in love with the dude. Bart was almost always the sufferer, with Billy as the rescuer, in tag matches, absorbing the punishment. It was too bad the Brawl for All ended up with his stupid match with Butterbean. As Mike Barton, he was never as compelling in Japan.

    So thanks again!

damn Bart Gunn reaks of studliness. Love his look [not over bulked due to steriods use] though like him in his trunks with cowboy boots better than the jeans…though no complaint. Trying to think who follows today in this “cowboy/manly” look….and can’t think of anyone who fits the bill much in the way Gunn and others of his generation did. anyone?

I was not really paying much attention to the ‘wwe’ during the ‘mankind’ period … I’ve never cared for, nor understood the need for, wrestlers who wear street clothes…

That said, the Arsenal breakdown of the ‘Mandible Claw’ sheds some light on this odd ‘hold’ and the photos of Bart Gunn and Ken Shamock being taken down by this odd maneuver are undeniably hot…

    Great article, Arsenal!
