I continue to obsess over the beauty and complexity of the wrestling holds in Mexican Lucha Libre. The victims of these entanglements — with their arms and legs all wrapped up — appear to be surprised by their helpless situation, obviously out-wrestled and befuddled (and therefore emasculated.) They look like Batman in some sadistic trap set by the Joker, vulnerable to being unmasked and unable to defend himself or protect his secret identity, let alone Gotham City.
The sneering villain, meanwhile, celebrates his dominance with some cocky display like a Double Bicep Flex. He takes his time working the hold, letting the hero experience immobility and humiliation for as long as possible.
I wonder who invents these holds and figures out exactly how to entangle the bodies for maximum pain and viewing pleasure?!
Do the Luchadores all get together on their days off to wrap each other up in various positions to determine how to lock up their bodies in order to look hot without anyone seriously getting hurt? If so, I wouldn’t mind attending those practice sessions!
